Rookery Gardens is an Open Community Rehabilitation Service providing accommodation and support for up to 23 service users.
Established in July 2017, it is a partnership between Birmingham Mind and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT), combining clinical expertise with wellbeing-focused support to help people on their recovery journey.
Located within NHS hospital grounds, Rookery Gardens offers an alternative to traditional hospital wards, providing a safe and supportive environment where individuals can receive the treatment and support they need before moving on to more independent living.
Tailored Accommodation
Rookery Gardens is unique in its ability to offer a range of accommodation options tailored to individual support needs, including:
- Single-occupancy flats
- Two-bedroom shared houses with en-suite bedrooms
- Male and female assessment houses, offering three or four-bedroom shared accommodation
This flexible approach allows service users to receive support in the least restrictive environment possible while progressing towards greater independence.
Holistic Support
Every service user has access to a dedicated multidisciplinary team, including:
- A Named Nurse
- An Occupational Therapist
- A Recovery Navigator
Additional support is available from a Clinical Psychologist and a Peer Mentor, ensuring a genuinely holistic and person-centred approach to care.
Promoting Independence and Recovery
At Rookery Gardens, the focus is on empowering people to take control of their own recovery journey. Through personalised support plans, meaningful activities, and strong community connections, service users are encouraged to build confidence, resilience, and independence.
By providing a more homely environment and moving away from traditional inpatient rehabilitation models, Rookery Gardens helps people develop the skills and routines needed for successful independent living and continued recovery within their local community.
Referrals
Although Rookery Gardens does not resemble a traditional hospital setting, it is an inpatient service.
Referrals are therefore managed through Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s Steps 2 Recovery bed management process.
