Birmingham Mind is committed to involving Volunteers within our services.
Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting individuals, raising awareness, and promoting mental health in meaningful ways.
Volunteers have unique life experiences that benefit us greatly and help us to enhance the support we can provide to our service users and the local community.
Who can volunteer?
- You need to be over 18 years old and able to give a regular time commitment of at least 3-4 hours a week.
- You need to live local to Birmingham or the surrounding area and be able to travel to the location where you will be volunteering easily.
- If you are a student or work full-time, we can offer volunteer roles during evenings and weekends.
- We welcome volunteers who have been out of work for a while looking to gain experience and new skills.
- We welcome volunteers with lived experience of mental health as long as we feel this will not be detriment to your own health and wellbeing.
- Birmingham Mind is only able to accept applications for volunteer roles advertised on our website.
- Birmingham Mind is unable to accommodate requests for work experience / student placements or newly qualified counsellors.
Volunteer Recruitment Process
- Find a volunteer vacancy that interests you.
- Please read the volunteer role description in full, before you apply for a role.
- Complete the online application form and remember to indicate which role you are interested in.
- Once we receive your application form you will be contacted to arrange an informal interview.
- If successful we will request 2 references from you. (Please note that you will need to have known your referees for over 2 years and they shouldn’t be your partner or a relative)
- You will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS online (at no cost to you). You will need to provide approved ID Documents to verify the DBS application.
- Once the DBS application is complete you will need to complete our mandatory volunteer training courses. Full details will be provided.
- Finally you will be invited to attend a Volunteer Induction session.
- You will then be contacted to arrange a start date.
The recruitment process can take up to 4 to 6 weeks to complete. Volunteer Inductions can only take place when we have a sufficient number of volunteers ready to attend.
How can we support you as a volunteer?
- You will be allocated a Line Manager and you will receive training / support in your role.
- Your Line Manager will complete regular reviews / supervision with you.
- You will be offered further training to develop your knowledge / skills.
- You will be invited to Volunteer events, meetings and yearly celebrations.
- You will be re-imbursed for any out of pocket expenses when you start your role, such as travel and lunch (when you volunteer for 4hours or more).
